The speed differences are massive. On ubuntu I can barely open a page, on Windows or on my phone it's perfectly fine.

In ubuntu terminal, enter:
sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi
then enter your password at the prompt and press enter
then enter:
sudo modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 and press enter
See if that improves the speed and report back.
Im getting this :
modprobe: FATAL: Module iwlwifi is in use.
In terminal run:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
This will give you the wireless conf file.
At the bottom of the file, press enter to give yourself a blank line, then enter:
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1
Save the file and reboot, then test speeds.
It's an empty file.
Enter the code and save.
Reboot and try.
It looks Ok for now. Thank you very much. If there's a problem I'll write again.

Also make sure to use wpa2 encryption for best results with linux drivers.
Actually after 10 minutes the speed is very low again..

What channel on the router (try 1 or 11)?

maybe in addition to setting 11n_disable=1 you also need to set your router to bg mode instead of bgn mode.
setting 'swcrypt=1' or other combination of parameter may be useful. You will have to experiment.
In addition this may be a bug that has been fixed in a newer kernel. 3.13 is already quite old.
Try the Ubuntu 14.10 Beta2 LiveCD/LiveUSB and see if the problem is still present. 14.10 comes with Kernel 3.16.

Ubuntu 15.10 下一个关于 WiFi 的奇怪问题
这个故事，先要从 docky 说起。如果觉得这不是重点请直接跳过。
Ubuntu 默认的 dock 在左边，然而有些个人原因感觉放在左边不是很顺手，然后就把他隐藏了，安装了 docky 在下方弄个 dock 出来做替代品（
Docky是从GNOME Do项目剥离出来的一个Dock软件，最初即为GNOME Do的“Docky”模式。Docky可以被视为Mac OS X的Dock的最佳克隆，其3D主题和平滑放大的效果与Mac OS X如出一辙。但是Docky并不简简单单通过模仿就完整，它还具备不少自己的特色
Ubuntu 和 docky 是在别人家装好的，把电脑背回家之后，第一件事当然是连接 WiFi，当它显示已连接的时候，正打算打开 Chrome，发现鼠标划过 docky 没有反应，Chrome 也没有启动。以为程序挂了就从 shell 重启了 docky。
然而，它报错了……
Docky crashes - System.Exception: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method &Get& with signature &ss& on interface &org.freedesktop.UPower& doesn't exist.
呃？DBus？从来没见过这玩意呐？百度，谷歌，看了 bug 报告，爬了 launchpad 论坛，总之我各种方法都试过了。
然而，并没有什么琴梨用。
既然不能用咱就换个别的啊。不管怎样先去做我的事情咯。正打算先换个 DNS，然后熟练打开系统设置，网络，于是神奇的是——它卡了半天，然后告诉我：
系统的网络服务与此版本的网络管理器不兼容。
然后设置界面就只剩下一个代理了。还觉得是不是脸黑，重启了一下系统。oho，这次问题没解决，顺带把右上角的 WiFi 标志搞没了。my god.
好在系统还能正常上网，就去寻找了这个问题的解决方案。嗯，挺给力的四步走，重启之后问题解决了，如下：
cd /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
NetworkManager
呐，原来的四步走被我整理了一下变成了上面这样，会不会更容易理解一点。这样倒是解决了网络，而且惊喜的是重启了之后 docky 又正常了，看来就是这的问题了。然而，当我又一次连上我家 WiFi 的时候，悲剧重演。
可是更好玩的是，上文我说我是在别人家装好的系统，为啥别人家的 WiFi 一点问题都没。于是我重复了上面的操作，打开手机的网络共享，让电脑连接手机，然而并没有什么奇怪的问题；断开对手机的连接后连接我家 WiFi 问题依旧。
Well，问题百分之八十就出在 WiFi 上了。考虑到 Ubuntu 14.04 下并不会出现这个问题，所以大概可能就是新系统的问题了。看看 /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections 下面有什么咯？
$ cd /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
看起来好像是用 SSID 来命名 WiFi 的配置文件？看看什么内容：
$ sudo vim kotori
#这里的vim当然是我自己装的啦
对比了一下两个文件，其中 kotori 是存储我家 WiFi 的 config 文件，kirainmoe 就是存储我手机共享热点的 config 啦（啊？你说啥？SSID？呃……不要在意细节！不要在意细节！不要在意细节！）

我们发现它们的内容并不一样，其中主要是：[wifi]部分，正常的 config 多了一个 mode=infrastructure，[wifis-ecurity]部分，正常的 config 多了一个 auth-alg=open 和 psk=? ，而不正常的 config 多了一个 psk-alg=1。
huh？问题难道出在这里嘛？手动把两个文件的内容合并了一下，把不正常的那一份 config 删掉不该有的，加上它没有的，重启。

于是，右上角的 WiFi 图标没有消失，系统设置网络部分正常，docky 也正常工作。
后记：并不知道是什么原因造成的这样一个问题，可能是 Ubuntu 15.10 的 bug，可能是驱动没装好，也可能是个例
吧……目前好像没有什么问题，但愿别出事就好，我并不想再重装一次系统QAQ

自ubuntu10.10发布之后，发现笔记本连接无线老是不成功，连启用无线的选项框都是不可选状态。一直很疑惑，网上有一种使用wireless软件扫描开启的方法，用过一次，第二次无线网卡在windows7下都不能用了，完全就一悲剧。新买的上网本也出现这种问题，ubuntu刚装好的时候无线正常使用，两天之后就无法使用了。今天找到一个可以解决的方案：
[原因]Ubuntu upgrade的rfkill tool默认block了wifi模块

最近更新了ubuntu 到14.04 发现网络超慢，后来升级更新包，直接网络图表不见了，再后来重装network-manager 把图标找回来了，但是提示wifi设备未托管。网上说需要搭建dns缓存服务器啥的都不行。
关键还是ubuntu对网卡支持的问题，周围的无线网络多了就会出现上网超慢这种情况，可以改改网络的加密方式或者频道id。
解决方案：
ubuntu网卡管理分为Network-Manager可视化界面和系统自带的interfaces；他们两个为了避免冲突，又能共享配置，就有了下面的现象：
1、当Network-Manager发现/etc/network/interfaces被改动的时候，则关闭自己（显示为未托管），除非Network-Manager中managed配置项(哪里配置见下面第2点)被设置成真。
2、当managed设置成真时，/etc/network/interfaces，则不生效。也就是说完全由Network-Manager托管

1. /etc/network/interfaces 恢复原样吧，改成如下
iface lo inet loopback
2. 配置nm-system-settings.conf （在/etc/NetworkManager/下面） 没有的自己建
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile
[ifupdown]
managed=true
#这个很关键
3. 删除/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/下面文件，解决一些新旧版本不兼容的问题
4. service network-manager restart 重启
