Learn where the Side Switch is and what it doesThese iPad models have a Side Switch on the upper right side of the device, above the volume buttons:
iPad Air, iPad 2, iPad (3rd generation), and iPad (4th generation)
iPad mini, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3
You can set the Side Switch to lock the display orientation or mute&certain&sounds.
These iPad models don't have a Side Switch, you can use&&to lock the display orientation or mute the device:
iPad Mini 4
iPad Air 2
Orientation LockOrientation Lock keeps the display from switching between portrait and landscape mode. When you turn on&Orientation Lock, you'll see&&in the status bar.
MuteWhen you mute your iPad, you won't hear these sounds:
Notifications
Sound effects
Game audio
You'll still hear sound from your media, such as these:
Set the Side Switch
Tap Settings & General.
Under Use Side Switch To, select Lock Rotation or Mute.
Turn on Orientation Lock when the Side Switch is set to Mute
Rotate your iPad so the display is the way you want it.
Swipe up along the bottom of the screen to display Control Center. You can do this from any screen, including the Lock screen.
Tap the Orientation Lock button.
The Orientation Lock button will appear highlighted when it's on:
Turn on Mute when the Side Switch is set to Orientation Lock

Get help with Orientation LockYour iPad display might not rotate when you rotate the device. Follow these steps to solve the issue.
Some apps don't rotate the display&when you rotate your iPad, so see if you can rotate the display from the Home screen (press the Home button to get to the Home screen).
If you see&&in the status bar, Orientation Lock is on, and your device won't rotate. If it's on, turn it off.
To make sure the switch is set where you want it, turn the Side Switch on and then off again.

Important Image Use Information
By copying or making any use of the image below, you acknowledge that you have read and understand, and agree to, the Image Usage Agreement below that governs your use of the Image. If you do not agree to the Agreement&#8217;s terms, do not copy or use the Image in any way, unless you have written permission signed by Apple.
Usage Agreement
Subject to the terms of this Agreement, you may use the Image solely in whole for editorial use by press and/or industry analysts. This right to use is personal to you and is not transferable by you to another party. The Image cannot be used to promote or sell any product or technology (such as on advertising, brochures, book-covers, stock photos, t-shirts, or other promotional merchandise). You may not alter, or modify the Image, in whole or in part, for any reason.
As between you and Apple, Apple is and shall remain the sole and exclusive owner of the Image. You will not delete, alter, or obfuscate any proprietary legends relating to the Image, and each use will be accompanied by the applicable proprietary attribution shown next to the Image.
