Discussion on Applying the VSC-HVDC Technology in Global Energy Interconnection

Global energy interconnection(GEI) proposed by SGCC which puts ultra-high voltage(UHV) power grid as the backbone network and delivering clean energy as the dominant, connects large-scale clean energy base and a variety of distributed power, and is a global energy configuration platform of wide service, strong energy configuration, high safety and reliability and green and low-carbon. With such advantages as active and reactive power being independently controlled, no need for reactive power compensation problems, supplying for the passive system, low harmonic level, and suitable for constituting the multi-terminal direct current(MTDC) system, the voltage source converter-based high voltage direct current(VSC-HVDC) technology is supremely qualified for building global energy interconnection. Given this background, the great demand of global energy interconnection is analyzed for grid-connected and transmission of large-scale clean energy, the development situation, key technology and engineering application of the VSC-HVDC technology are summarized, and the future development trend in this field is pointed out.
